The Planning and Zoning Department strives to provide comprehensive sustainable community planning by supporting the Economic Development Department in their effort to expand and diversify Washington’s robust job base and attract investment to Washington. In addition, the Planning and Zoning Department works with the Engineering Department to expand and improve Washington’s transportation network and infrastructure to facilitate future development. Finally, the Planning and Zoning Department continues to work with the Historic Preservation Commission and other local organizations to continue the efforts to revitalize our distinctive Downtown District, the Riverfront, and our historic neighborhoods.
Grow WashMO - A 25 Year Vision for Washington, our Comprehensive Plan, is our guidebook for
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY PLANNING in our thriving City!
The Goals of the Planning and Zoning Department are multifaceted with the intention to preserve, enhance, and expand the richness and beauty of the City of Washington. Our number one priority is to update the City of Washington’s Zoning Code to facilitate the development of a mix of high-end residential housing and more affordable options for our Washington workforce to call home.
This will include the identification of future land use that will support continued growth and revitalization for retail, office, and mixed-use developments that embraces the addition of bicycle and pedestrian facilities, sidewalks, bike lanes, shared lanes, and side paths, to allow for safer travel to work, shopping, schools, and other community amenities.
An additional goal is to craft a Downtown and Fifth Street Master Plan that will enhance these spaces with more dining, shopping, and lodging to support residents and visitors alike. We will transform 5th Street into a pedestrian-friendly multi-use corridor that serves as the new entrance into Downtown. To support this effort, we will design a comprehensive Downtown parking strategy to provide shared parking facilities in strategic locations and improves walkability in the Downtown District.
Finally, in collaboration with Downtown Washington Inc, Washington in Bloom, Washington Historic Preservation Commission and various other City Departments, we plan to improve the aesthetic and wayfinding of our major roads within Washington while facilitating the preservation, definition, and identity of Washington’s existing residential neighborhoods.
