The City of Washington has established a Sister City relationship with the community of Marbach am Neckar in Germany. Marbach is a community similar in size to Washington and is located on the Neckar River not far from Stuttgart, Germany. Stuttgart is the Sister City of St. Louis, Missouri.

The formal signing of Sister City documents occurred in Marbach on November 11, 1990 and in Washington on May 26, 1991. In each case, citizens from the other community were on hand for the signing.

Sister City relationships have been established between numerous cities across the world. It is intended that through contact between the citizens, the knowledge of each other gained, and the friendships established, it will lead to better understanding of each other and more peace throughout the world.

Citizens from Washington and Marbach have traveled between the two (2) cities numerous times. For the most part, when visiting the Sister City, the citizens have stayed in private homes. The visits between the two (2) cities have consisted of individual as well as group visits.

Students from the two (2) communities have traveled to the Sister City and stayed from a few days to a few weeks, every year since the Sister City agreements were signed. There have been visits between musical groups, elected officials, business persons, students, individuals, groups, and firemen.

A very close and warm relationship has been established between the two (2) cities and their citizens.
